Samsung's Largest Union Wins a 10-Year Profit-Sharing Deal Worth Up To 26.6 Billion Dollars

On May 27, 2026, Samsung Electronics' largest union voted to approve a new labor agreement that averts what would have been an 18-day chip manufacturing strike.

The deal, which was finalized in a last-minute negotiation after months of escalating tensions, makes roughly 48,000 workers in Samsung's semiconductor division eligible for annual bonuses averaging around $340,000 per person. Some estimates put the figure closer to $400,000 depending on final profit calculations.

The bonuses will come from a profit-sharing formula tied directly to Samsung's semiconductor operating profit. Under the 10-year agreement, Samsung will distribute 10.5% of its chip division's operating profit as employee bonuses in the form of stock, plus an additional 1.5% in cash, down from the union's original demand of 15%. The total bonus pool is estimated at roughly 40 trillion won, or about $26.6 billion, based on projected 2026 profits.

One other significant change in the deal is that bonuses are no longer capped at 50% of an employee's annual pay. Given the current profit trajectory, that cap had become a ceiling the company kept hitting.

Why the Numbers Are So Big

Samsung's operating profit is projected to multiply roughly sevenfold in 2026, reaching an estimated 330 trillion won (about $218 billion). In Q1 2026 alone, the company posted approximately $39 billion in operating profit, and annualizing that run rate makes Samsung's full-year target look conservative rather than aspirational.

The reason for this profit explosion is one product category that sits at the very center of the AI infrastructure boom. High Bandwidth Memory, or HBM, is a specialized type of memory chip that stacks layers of DRAM vertically and connects them to AI processors like NVIDIA GPUs.

Every major AI data center being built today by Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta requires HBM in large quantities. Demand for HBM has been outstripping supply since late 2025, and all three major suppliers (SK Hynix, Samsung, and Micron) have reported that their HBM production capacity is sold out through 2026.

The global semiconductor market is projected to approach $975 billion in 2026, with the memory segment growing at 30% year-over-year. Bank of America has called this a supercycle comparable to the semiconductor boom of the 1990s, forecasting global DRAM revenue to surge 51% and NAND revenue to rise 45% this year.

The Strike That Almost Happened

The strike was originally scheduled to begin on May 21, and over 30,000 union members had taken to the streets in the weeks leading up to the deadline demanding a larger cut of AI-driven profits.

The workers' argument was straightforward, rooted in the fact that they are the ones physically manufacturing the hardware that makes the global AI buildout possible, and if Samsung's semiconductor profit multiplies sevenfold, workers should see a proportional share.

The pressure intensified because Samsung's domestic rival SK Hynix had already agreed to a profit-sharing deal in September 2025, setting aside 10% of operating profit for its workers. That deal triggered defections and unionization pressure at Samsung, because when your competitor's workforce already has a profit-sharing plan, union negotiations get pointed very quickly.

The Internal Fallout

While the strike threat is over, the resentment it exposed is not. The bonus pool is divided using a 40/60 formula where forty percent is shared equally among all units and the remaining 60% is allocated based on performance metrics that heavily favor Samsung's memory chip unit, leaving workers in other divisions like mobile, display, and consumer electronics looking at materially smaller payouts.

A smaller union representing mostly non-chip staff has already filed a legal injunction seeking to block the agreement, and only about 21% of that union approved the deal. The internal message is uncomfortable but clear, because the memory chip team generates the majority of Samsung's profits in 2026 and therefore gets the majority of the bonuses.

The ripple effects are spreading beyond Samsung too. Workers in sectors ranging from biotechnology and automotive to shipbuilding and IT across South Korea are now using the Samsung deal as a template, asking their own employers for a larger share of corporate profits through bonuses. Employees at Samsung affiliates including Samsung Display and Samsung SDI are reportedly pushing for similar arrangements.

The Bigger Picture

For two decades, memory chips were a brutal commodity business where workers had little claim on the upside because there rarely was one, but the AI buildout has inverted that completely. HBM is now a chokepoint in the global technology supply chain, and the people who make it have discovered they have real leverage.

SK Hynix leads the HBM market with roughly 60% share, while Samsung holds about 30% to 35% and is rebuilding after quality issues with earlier HBM3E shipments, and Micron sits at roughly 10% after exiting consumer memory entirely to focus on AI data center customers. Together, these three companies form an oligopoly that controls nearly all advanced memory production on Earth, and when your workforce sits on a genuine global bottleneck like that, it discovers leverage it did not previously know it had.

The Bottom Line

The Samsung bonus deal is the clearest example yet of AI wealth flowing downstream to the people who build the physical infrastructure, but the distribution is uneven and politically charged. Chip workers win while non-chip workers feel left behind, and across South Korea, every major employer is now bracing for the same conversation. The AI boom created the profits, and the question of who gets to keep them is only beginning to be answered.
