OpenAI Plans Its Biggest ChatGPT Redesign Since Launch
OpenAI is preparing to turn ChatGPT into a so-called superapp, a single place that bundles coding tools, autonomous agents, image generation, and third-party services from partners that include Canva and Booking.com.
According to the reporting that surfaced the plan, this would be the largest redesign of the product since it first launched in November 2022, and the changes are set to begin reaching the web and mobile apps over the coming weeks.
The framing inside the company is blunt, with one senior employee summing up the thinking as chat being dead, meaning the future the team is betting on is software that does things for you rather than software that only answers you.
What the Overhaul Actually Changes
The redesign reworks the interface so that the chat box stops being the whole product and becomes one tool among many. The plan pushes users toward Codex, the company's coding tool, alongside agent features that can carry out multi step tasks like writing and deploying code, booking travel, or managing a calendar, and it surfaces image generation and partner apps directly inside the same window.

The idea is that you connect your tools once and then move between jobs without leaving the app, which is a very different shape from a single column of questions and replies.
The internal codename attached to the effort is Aria, and to build it the company folded its ChatGPT, Codex, and product teams under one leader, Thibault Sottiaux, who described the goal as an assistant that follows you across everything in your life, at home and at work.
Three Pieces That Already Shipped
The overhaul is still reporting rather than a finished launch, but you do not have to take the plan on faith, because three features went live in the first week of June that point the same way.
The first is Lockdown Mode, a security setting that strips out the app's web facing powers, including live browsing, deep research, agent mode, and file downloads, so that a hidden malicious instruction has no easy channel to leak your data back out. It is not new, since it first arrived for enterprise customers back in February, but it expanded to all personal and self serve business accounts in early June, which matters because you cannot safely hand an assistant the keys to your inbox and your files without a brake like this sitting next to it.
The second piece is a rebuilt memory system that landed on June 4. The new architecture keeps your context current instead of letting it go stale, doubles the stored memory for Plus and Pro users, and for the first time brings the background memory that learns from your chats to free accounts.
By the company's own measure, factual recall climbed from roughly 68 percent in 2025 to nearly 83 percent in 2026, which is the kind of improvement an agent needs if it is going to act on your behalf across days and weeks rather than forgetting you between sessions.
The third piece went live on June 5, and it is the most concrete sign of the agent turn. You can now draft, edit, and send an email straight from ChatGPT on the web, working through its writing blocks after you connect a Gmail or Outlook account, with no copy and paste into a separate client. The feature is web only for now and it sits behind the paid connectors rather than the free tier, so it is aimed at the working professional the company most wants to keep, and it closes the loop from writing a thing to actually doing the thing.
Why Chat Alone Is No Longer Enough
The push has a clear commercial logic behind it. Business customers already generate close to 40 percent of OpenAI's revenue, a share the company expects to reach half by the end of 2026, and an app that completes tasks is far easier to sell into a company than a chatbot that drafts text.
Codex has become a real growth engine, with weekly users climbing sixfold to more than 5 million since launch, and the company wants to put those coding powers in front of the much larger general audience without making anyone learn a new workflow. All of this is happening as OpenAI eyes a public listing and sharpens its rivalry with Anthropic for enterprise accounts, so steering users toward higher value tools is as much about the balance sheet as it is about the product.
The Superapp Playbook Is Borrowed
The model OpenAI is reaching for is not invented from scratch. Apps like WeChat in China and Grab in Southeast Asia grew from a single use into sprawling ecosystems that handle messaging, payments, shopping, and travel inside one shell, and that is the template here.
The bet is that whoever owns the everyday interface can quietly route people toward whatever makes money, which is why partner integrations and agents sit at the center of the redesign rather than at the edges.
It also sets up a direct fight with Microsoft Copilot, which already lives inside the email and documents people use all day, so OpenAI is trying to become the one front door rather than another tab.
What It Means If You Use the App
For you, the near term effect is that ChatGPT starts nudging you toward doing more inside it and bouncing out to other apps less often. That is convenient when the assistant can book the trip or send the message, and it is worth a second thought when a single app is steering you toward whatever it earns the most from.
The features that shipped this month are the honest tell, because a security brake, a stronger memory, and the power to send email are exactly the building blocks an assistant needs before it can be trusted to act, and they arrived together for a reason.
The Bottom Line
The redesign itself is still a reported plan, so treat the superapp framing as a direction rather than a finished thing. What is not in question is that the groundwork shipped this month, with a memory upgrade, a security mode, and direct email sending all landing inside a single week.
Watch whether the agent features actually save you steps or mostly route you toward what OpenAI sells, because that difference is the whole game.
